What do Pope Innocent III, Malvolio, Fagin and Hitler have in common?
If your answer is “I have no idea”, then you will have an idea when George Smiley and Obi-Wan-Kanobi are added to the list. Yes, they are all roles played by Sir Alec Guinness during his long and outstanding career: he won Academy and BAFTA Awards for his portrayal of Colonel Nicholson in The Bridge Over the River Kwai. Find out more about one of our best-loved actors on Monday 12 January at 2.30pm at the Petersfield Community Centre when David Jeffery will give a talk entitled Sir Alec Guinness (who – spoiler alert! – is buried in Petersfield Cemetery).

Around & About
- Book Circle 7 (3rd Thursday from 2.30 pm – 4.00 pm in members’ homes) would like to boost their membership.
Unlike most book groups, members choose their own book to read, based on that month’s theme. At meetings, each member presents a synopsis and brief critique of the book they have read. These overviews then stimulate a discussion around the theme: for example, differences between the classical children’s literature of our youth and the works of modern authors such as David Walliams and Terry Deary.
If this different approach to a book group is of interest to you, please contact convenor Jenny Carter - There is a vacancy in the Watercolour Workshop group (every Friday from 10.00am – 12.00pm). To find out more, contact convenor Keith Evans via the website.
- The Spanish – ¡Hola! group (term time Thursday 2.30pm – 4.00pm in a private house) has a vacancy. Convenor Peter Clist says the standards of Spanish range roughly from A2 to B2 on the European scale for language proficiency so it’s not a group for beginners. But it’s a friendly group with lots of conversation plus reading, translating, some grammar – and coffee halfway. The cost is £2.50 per session, collected at the end of the term. A ‘Try us to see if you like us’ session is offered. Enquiries are welcome via the website.
Have Your Say
“I would like to thank my co-convenors Elaine Chisholm and Sandra Sands: I couldn’t wish for a better team. If you don’t know who they are, they’re either introducing the speaker or they’re on the door, meeting and greeting you with the zapper! They are always coming up with new ideas and/or interesting topics and are then kept very busy finding appropriate speakers and arranging - or rearranging - the dates for the talks. As a result of their hard work, we have got excellent speakers booked for all the meetings until the end of the summer term.” Peggy P.
