Discover: SiteWorks

Some may recall that we lost access to the Petersfield U3A website over a year ago. Around 700 other u3as were also affected. Thanks to the hard work of the two individuals who maintain the software for those sites, it was restored.

Although there was a 'happy' ending, the problems we faced highlighted the ageing web software used by these 700 sites.

In true u3a fashion, a team of volunteers created a new software version that would take a more modern approach. Among those 700 u3as, there is a wide range of computer skills. The task was to build something that required minimal computer skills to get started and allowed for further development if desired.

Petersfield u3a was one of 28 'Pioneers' who helped develop SiteWorks, which enables one to take advantage of extra capabilities. As time passes, we hope to improve it even further.

Amongst the new capabilities are:

• More modern appearance
• Much improved picture handling
• Better information layouts
• Automatic layout changes occur when viewing on devices like tablets or smartphones.
• Easier ways to build and update pages
