Beware: the yellow-legged hornet is an extremely aggressive predator of honeybees and other pollinators!
Also known as the Asian Hornet, this insect was accidentally introduced into France in 2004. Since then, it has spread throughout Europe. The first nest in the UK was found in 2016. So far this year, there have been 68 sightings and 24 nests destroyed.
Beekeepers are leading the campaign to recognise and report the yellow-legged hornet which, should it spread through the country, could do so much harm to our biodiversity.
Find out more about the Asian Hornet by coming along to Petersfield Community Centre on Tuesday 23 September at 2pm. Beekeeper Julie Trice will be there to explain why eradicating this insect is an issue for everyone.

Around & About

• The Backgammon group, which currently meets on Monday mornings at St Peters Court, is being suspended temporarily.
  But it will be back!
  Watch this space for news of the return of this friendly group.
  
• Last year there was an alarming 30 percent annual increase in the number of accidents involving mobility scooters.
  To help raise awareness of this safety issue, Petersfield u3a has several FREE information packs to give away.
  If you are a mobility scooter user and would be interested in a pack – which includes safety guidance as well as a bundle of stickers to improve the visibility of your scooter - please contact Sandy Stephens.
  
• Between 28 August and 11 September, there were six reported incidents of courier fraud in Petersfield. Elderly victims were targeted, losing an average of £6,000.
  Residents in Bedford Road, Noreuil Road, The Spain, Heath Road and Wetherdown were all visited by criminals pretending to be couriers appointed by the ‘police’.
