Talk by Vivian Ash

Ever since Darwin, a branching tree has been the model for the evolution of life on Earth with genes passed vertically from parents to offspring. However, the discovery of horizontal gene transfer has threatened this idea. Has the tree of life been cut down or will it live on as the primary paradigm of life on our planet?

Vivian is a retired science teacher with a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Queen Mary College, University of London and a D.Phil. in Evolutionary Biology from the University of York.
He has worked in Lima, Peru, for 30 years and has a Peruvian wife. They have two daughters who are both presently living in England.
They maintain a house in Lima and a flat in Fleet, Hampshire and try to enjoy two summers a year.
