Uppark, devastated by fire in 1989

The young HG Wells, the future Emma Lady Hamilton, and the infamous Earl of Tankerville (who escaped the executioner’s axe on three occasions!) may not appear to have much in common.
Yet all have connections with Uppark, the 17th century mansion near South Harting, which is owned by the National Trust.
Following completion of essential works, this classic historical house is now open for bookable guided tours only, while the gardens (which overlook the South Downs) are free to enjoy. Facilities include a refreshment kiosk and second-hand bookshop.
To learn more about Uppark itself as well as the people who have lived in or visited it, come along to Petersfield Community Centre on Wednesday 15 October at 2.30pm.

Dates for your Diary

It’s almost that time of the year again: yes, Petersfield u3a will hold its 2025 AGM at the Community Centre on Monday 10 November at 2.30pm. It will be followed by a presentation on modern day smuggling. Watch this space for more details.
Ahead of that, there are plenty of talks to enjoy.

Around & About

  • It’s back …
The popular Members Lunch is preparing to hold its next event at The George pub on The Square at 12pm on Thursday 23 October. All u3a members are welcome.
To find out more or to book your place – menu choices are needed by Monday 20 October – please contact Marion Flett at marionflett@hotmail.com.
  • Looking to get your creative juices flowing, but unsure where to start?
Then how about signing up for the Make! Workshop.
Starting on Monday 20 October at the Community Centre - running fortnightly from 1030am to 12.30pm – this new group will be perfect for anyone who enjoys making things.
You’ll find more details in the next issue of ‘Connect’ and on the website. In the meantime, if you’d like to register your interest, please contact convener Jenny Stacy at jennystacy6@gmail.com.
  • Like to get ‘Bach’ to the music of the baroque? Trying to get a ‘Handel’ on the 20th century avant garde? The ‘Liszt’ could go on …
If you like music of all shapes and sizes, Music Appreciation is for you. No musical knowledge is necessary, you just need to bring a pair of ears!
The group gets together once a month on a Monday morning in the Community Centre. Members will take a theme, then play and discuss related music. Recent themes have included water, magic and the works of Ravel.
New music lovers would be most welcome to come along to the next meeting on Monday 13 October.
  • Also keen to attract new members is Photography For Fun.
The group’s philosophy is to be inquisitive and have fun learning together and from each other. No photographic expertise is required and it doesn’t matter if you use your mobile phone or own the latest high spec camera.
Members choose a theme each month and share a couple of images, meeting on the third Wednesday afternoon of the month in a member’s home.
Occasionally, the group also visits photographic exhibitions in London and Winchester, for example.
  • Perfect weather (mainly sunny and not too warm) greeted members of the Country Walking group for their September outing, led by John Hewitt.
The route began and ended in Hawkley, taking in Colemore and Priors Dean as well as the wonderfully named Happersnapper Hanger. A highlight was surely a stop at The Pub With No Name (where refreshments were taken)!
