Talk by Peter Ball

A revolution in research over the last roughly 15 years has enabled treatments - both in development and in use - that would have once seemed like science fiction. This talk will summarise the driver's behind this revolution and where we are today. It will also explain the ongoing challenges in moving from the experimental to the mass-produced, including the cost and ethical aspects.
After completing a PhD and a postdoc. in molecular biology at the Medical School, University of Bristol between 1975 and 1981, Peter moved sideways into industry. He held a number of increasingly senior global technical and commercial roles at Pall Life Sciences (now Cytiva).
He took another sideways move by retiring early at 60 in 2014 and taking up a role mentoring early-stage Life Sciences start-ups. Not least because he has zero interest in the typical pursuits of the retired (gardening, golf and DIY).
His biggest passion is following the rapid progress in cell and gene therapy, although he has a side-passion for fast cars, including the occasional track day. Most notable to date being to drive the Top Gear circuit at Dunsfold in a 600 bhp Nissan GT35R Nismo.
