The talk will:-

  • Start by looking at the relevance and importance of submarine cables to our modern world.
  • Provide a brief history of subsea communications cables.
  • Discuss key aspects of submarine cables and underlying technology.
  • Look at who builds cables and what is involved in planning and implementing cable systems.
  • Environmental considerations.
  • Look at the leading causes of cable failure and how they are repaired.
  • Discuss cable security and espionage.

Nigel has spent 40 years in international telecommunications, in the UK and overseas. working on the design, implementation and operation of both satellite and submarine cable systems, He began his career working in satellite communications and including time with Hughes Aircraft Corporation in LA where he helped build and test satellites. Later, he progressed to submarine communications, where he has been involved in the implementation of several international cable systems.
