Forget pirates and rum barrels: for today’s amazingly daring smugglers it’s ‘anything goes’
Malcolm Nelson makes a welcome return with his fascinatingtalk on Modern Day Smuggling, and follows the Annual General Meeting which starts at 2.30pm on Monday 10 November, chaired by outgoing chairman Charles Price. “Whatever will they think of next” is a look at some of the bizarre methods smugglers use, and their struggles to avoid capture.
During his 40 years with HM Customs and Excise, Malcolm worked in many locations around the world on every aspect of catching smugglers. How will the Mexican cartels overcome President Trump’s wall? Seizures of tobacco and drugs are routine, but submarines… ambulances? This is your chance to find out if anything is beyond the smugglers’ reach.

Around & About
- Hurry! The first session of Make! (creating a collage) is on Monday 20 October, from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Community Centre. These fun and relaxing sessions cost £2, and you can make your own collages using Jenny’s materials. Squeeze into a space this week or book for the next creative session on 3 November, for ‘dressing a fairy for the tree’.
- Final call for the next Lunch Club! You are invited to join the u3a Welcome group for lunch at The George in The Square, starting at noon on 23 October. If you’d like to come, please book quickly and choose your menu – it promises to be an enjoyable lunch.
- The next Churches and Pubs meeting is on 2 December, when they will be visiting Privett churches, following the recent successful visit to churches around Cocking.
- How about a stroll among the memorials to the great and the good in Highgate Cemetery? They’re as varied as Karl Marx, Christina Rossetti, George Eliot, Michael Faraday, George Michael, Alexander Litvinenko, Bob Hoskins, and many more. On 12 November, Strollers will be visiting – why not join them?
- The Arts and Heritage group is looking for someone to take over as Speaker Secretary. Esther Jones has been in this role since the group began, and is now stepping down. She has already done a lot of the work for next year’s speakers, and can give any advice and help needed. Contact Joan Shepley, Arts and Heritage Meetings Convenor.
- After a successful season that involved eight productions, the ticket organisers of the Chichester Theatre Group would now like to hand over to willing volunteer(s), starting with the summer season 2026. Volunteers can see what’s involved and contact us through the group page on the u3a website.
Have Your Say
“I thought today’s edition of Connect was particularly good. I found lots to interest me and the easy to click on website links provided additional details. I shall be joining the new Make! Group and looking forward to a nice lunch at The George.
Regarding the comment made by Pamela P. about members not bothering to follow links - It is of course better to open Connect on a computer or tablet, which makes the links easier to read, rather than a phone, which could be a bit small, especially if your eyesight is not so good.“ Frances L
“The format of the Connect newsletter is a vast improvement. Rather than scrolling endlessly on the old format, using the links to the website means that the information is as up to date as possible and eliminates unnecessary and time-consuming repetition of information.” Sarah B
“Really interesting - thanks so much for your continual work on Connect. So useful and beautifully written.” Sue H

“Thanks for last week’s ‘Connect’ on the language groups, two of which are mine. Nice to feel appreciated.” (Peter C)
The next issue of ‘Connect’ will be emailed to you on Friday 7 November, with a copy deadline for all contributions of Monday 3 November.
