The contrast couldn’t have been more extreme.
As the wife of a British official and a woman of high social status, her life in the 1930s in the Burmese city of Rangoon was one of great opulence and style.
But all that changed dramatically.
In 1942, she became one of thousands of civilians who took part in an arduous trek across some of the world’s most treacherous terrains, facing rivers, jungles, steep mountain ranges and dangerous wildlife.
Come along to Petersfield Community Centre on Monday 8 September at 2.30pm when our speaker Jenny Mallin will introduce you to My Great Aunt Constance and give you a real insight into an extraordinary life.

Around & About

  • There can’t be many Petersfield u3a groups which aim to delight all the senses …
Churches & Pubs is preparing to launch on 2 October with a very simple format: on the first Thursday of every other month, the group will visit one or two churches in and round Petersfield before heading off for lunch at a local pub.
Membership of this new group, initially limited to 20 people, will incur an annual fee of £5 with a donation of £2 per church visit for church funds.
  • If you‘d like to let your creative juices flow this autumn, then here’s some good news.
The Painting group – which meets every other Tuesday morning at Petersfield Community Centre – has a vacancy.
Relaxed and informal, it is open to all levels of talent and all interests!
  • Friendly rivalry gave way to lively chat when Pétanque held its first social afternoon.
A gazebo provided welcome shade as 12 players gathered between games to enjoy a sharing menu which ranged from quiche to olives and cherries to bubbly.
The pétanque group meets at The Avenue every Monday afternoon. Newcomers – with or without experience – would be most welcome. Some boules are available for anyone keen to ‘try before they buy’.
  • Goodbye Saturday, hello Friday …
Yes, from next month, ‘Connect’ will be emailed to you on the first and third Fridays of every month.
The e-newsletter will still work hard to keep you up-to-date with Petersfield u3a news; but the change of day means members of the ‘Connect’ team will no longer have to work at weekends. Hurrah!
