The Group was formed in 2012 to study the history of the town and to produce worthwhile research that could be saved and published in the longer term. It is a hands-on group with members doing their research and then sharing it with the others in the group.
The first project for the ten members was to write a book on the history of College Street. Each person had their area of responsibility and carried out their research, meeting together each month to discuss issues and help one another. The College Street project has now drawn to a close and the book was published in September 2016.

The group has now moved on to consider other aspects of Petersfield`s history. It will probably remain as a working group requiring individuals to carry out research, whether online or at the Museum, Library, Records Office, etc. Current research projects being undertaken by group members include aspects of the history of the Bedford Road Industrial Site, policing in Petersfield, local brickworks, the 1874 Election in Petersfield, Thomas Reed and the Swing Riots, the Firs Park site in Durford Road, the changes brought about by the coming of the railway, the construction of the toll roads and turnpikes and the royal visit to the town in the 1920s.
