Cycling for Fun

Status:Active, open to new members
Convenor:
When: Regular rides are offered depending on the time of year and the weather
Venue: No Fixed Venue

We are a group of more than fifty members who cycle “for fun”. We are a very friendly bunch and most of all we enjoy the social side of the sport. Each ride will always include a refreshment stop & often we will lunch at a suitable venue on the route.

Rides are offered over various distances (usually between 10 & 30 miles) from different starting points. Hills can be enjoyed either in the saddle or by walking and the average speed that we travel at is often below 10mph.  Our bikes vary considerably and many members now use electrical-assist bicycles. Sometimes we will travel to the starting point of the ride using either train or car (with cycle carriers).

We use a mobile phone app called “Spond” to organise our rides. A ride leader will propose a ride giving details of the meeting place, route, mileage, difficulty & refreshment stop(s) – amongst other matters. Members are then free to either “accept” or “decline” the ride on Spond and the ride leader will be able to see who is attending. Any new members will be set up with Spond on their mobile phone and shown how to use it (it is very easy to accept or decline a ride).

We have introduced a regular Wednesday Wander where we cycle in the locale to a suitable venue for refreshments before returning, this is proving to be a popular event. Why not join the Group to sample an enjoyable ride, good company and sometimes chocolate cake! Click on the link below and have a look at the recent ride reports and see what we have been up to.

As well as the regular standard ride’s we also try and get away for a few days twice a year in Spring (May) and Autumn (Sept). Recent venues have been; The New Forest, Isle of Wight, Tenterden in Kent, Swansea , Saxmundham in Suffolk and Wareham in Dorset. Usually between 15 &20 members of the group will attend these holidays. This Spring we went to Weymouth, have a look at the link below and see what you're missing!

Please note that there is now a nominal £3.00 annual subscription to cover the Groups expenses.

If you decide to join us then we hope we can demonstrate to you that third-age cycling isn’t a pain, it’s FUN.
