Talk by Ian Worley
Ian has sailed all his life, including crossing oceans with his young family. This fully illustrated talk tells the story of his voyage on the 78 ft yacht Great Britain II during her third circumnavigation in 1977, during which they raced furiously, encountered many storms, sustained damage to the boat, and suffered injuries and a lightning strike.
Ian grew up in West Wittering on the South Coast and has sailed all his life. He has gained a tremendous love and respect for the sea.
He has raced around the world, sailed oceans with his young family and now researches new material with a nautical theme as well as speaking on several subjects.
He started speaking back in 1978. He appeared several times on the BBC sports programme Grandstand with Frank Bough and, with a colleague, made a film of his experiences at sea.
In 1980 he slowed his speaking engagements and returned to work in the City. He retired in 2023 and has now recommenced speaking to audiences throughout southern England.
